Welcome to ‘The Long Run’. This is the quarterly ‘E-Zine’ Spring edition for paid subscribers.
I think this might need a new name. Danny Jones started his newsletter called ‘Lessons from the Long Run’. I can’t even compete with the guy on the internet! Feel free to email me your suggestions or drop them in the comments.
Thank you to all paid subscribers. I greatly appreciate it. Your monthly support has helped me take this little idea in my head and bring it to life.
When I started this thing in January, one of my concerns was, “What am I going to write about when there are not as many races over winter?”
Well, what a winter it has been. I found myself trying to figure out how to fit it all in. We’ve had the highs of UTMB through to the massive lows of losing members of our trail-running community.
This weekend, we had the Rakiura Challenge and Abel Tasman Coastal Classic. Next weekend, we have Taupo Ultra and Crater Rim. They’re coming thick and fast now. The TrailrunningNZ Event Calendar is taking a hammering. It feels like we’ve officially hit the race season!
Anyway, that’s enough waffle from me. I appreciate your support once again. I hope you get something out of this extra content.
BREAKING: Crush The Cargill Is A Fraud
On and on they go. Like it’s f🤬cking Mt.Kilamanjaro. “But have you crushed the Cargill?” “Have you qualified for Crush the Cargill?” Wow, big deal. You’ve got a slightly large hill and can run up and down it a few times. We get it. Come to Wellington. We’ve got tonnes of big hills.
Event Preview | The Wild
December 6th-10th, 2023. The week Malcolm Law finds out if he needs to file for refugee status somewhere in Eastern Europe🤣. It’s been a wild ride, but we are almost there. Waiting for this event has been an endurance event in its own right. But for those of you training for it, these next 2 months are about to fly by.
An SK A Month, Keeps The Doctor Away
The week before Tarawera, I invited Joe out for a short tapering run in Spicer Forest with myself and Dave Allen. Little did I know Joe was about to drop the mother of all intel bombs on us. “I’m thinking of attempting an SK every month this year” My mind was racing. I can’t have heard him correctly.
Backyard Ultramarathons | Here To Stay
When I first heard about backyard ultramarathons, I thought it sounded boring AF. It sounded marginally better than the 12 and 24-hour track events. At least in a backyard event, you’re generally running on some trail. In 2019, Shaun Collins brought the backyard format to Auckland, with Katie Wright beating out the boys for the crown and joining the 200 km club. I remember there was a lot of buzz after the event, and it was a hot topic on all the podcasts. But I still didn’t get it.

October Paid Subscriber Giveaway
I’ve just finished watching the below 2 videos over the weekend. They follow Sally McRae on her quest for the 200-mile grand slam in Murica’.
I’m in awe of her perseverance and straight-out willpower. I can’t even begin to comprehend how you attack some of these races🤯.
So this month, 3 copies of her new book are up for grabs!
Nothing fancy about this one. Comment below or email saying you want your name in the hat for the draw.
Full disclaimer: I haven’t read her book yet😂, but it’s on the list.
That's a wrap.
Bradley
I’d be up for a draw! I never will win an actual trail race. Sally came out for Runfest years ago - absolute legend!
