Segment Showdown October
Alright, Strava junkies. Here is your new assignment for October.
Wellington
Strava tells me I’ve run this segment 179 times. I’m not even in the top 10. Time for me to hang them up. Anyway, you’re not here for my 1/3 life crisis.
The Doctor > 4x4
📏1.49km | 👆109m | 🥵Avg Grade 4.8%
Make sure you’ve got your passport ready. This one is out in the Ptown jungle.
The best place to hit the segment is from the Spicer Botanical Park (The best Botanical Gardens in the Wellington region)
Don’t be fooled by the boring AF literal name. This is a great little segment. There are 2 segments on Strava, but this is the longer of the 2.
This is a shared mountain bike trail. It’s well-groomed with just enough rocks to keep you on your toes. This is one of those sneaky uphill trails that is fully runnable.
You will see a sign for “The Doctor”. I suggest you just come in hot from the car park so you get a good jump on the mugs who stop at the start, retying their shoes, not realising they’ve already triggered the segment.
The Doctor is the main trail. No need to turn off anywhere. If you can’t follow this trail, you might get lost trying to head back to Wellington on the motorway.
Past Porirua’s highest waterfall.
Just keep going straight up the guts.
Don’t get sucked out onto the boundary road. You want to stay on the trail.
The segment finishes with a decent pinch. Make sure you hammer it to the top.
When you hit the 4WD road, you’ve made it. Feel free to buckle over and enjoy the gravel. Think of it as a free Shakti matt.
If you want a longer run, turn left and loop over Colonial knob. If you want a shorter run, go back the way you came or turn right and then turn right at the bottom of the 4WD onto the Spicer link, which ends back at the car park.

Keep an eye on Grab-a-seat🤪!
If you’ve got a favourite trail running segment, send it in, and I’ll update this month’s segments or put it up next month.
